Klar vs. Google Analytics

A lightweight, cookie-free tracker vs. the free, cookie-based industry standard. Here's how they actually differ — including where Google wins outright.

Short answer: Google Analytics (GA4) is free, has by far the deepest feature set (predictive metrics, Google Ads integration, cross-platform app+web tracking, funnel and path exploration reports), and is the default choice for teams who already live in the Google Marketing Platform. That breadth comes at a cost: GA4 sets cookies, doesn't honor Do Not Track, ships a ~146 KB gzipped script, and its default use in the EU has repeatedly drawn GDPR scrutiny from regulators over US data transfers — most sites running it need an explicit cookie-consent banner. Klar has none of that: no cookies, no consent banner, a ~1.9 KB tracker, and a much smaller feature set. If you need Google Ads integration, cross-platform funnels, or don't want to pay anything and don't mind a consent banner, GA4 wins. If you want to ship analytics without a cookie banner and with a near-invisible script, Klar is the better fit.

Pricing comparison

GA4 standard is free for the vast majority of sites. Google doesn't publish GA4 360 (enterprise) pricing directly — it's sold through resellers on a negotiated, usage-based contract, so the figure below is a commonly reported starting point, not an official price.

Tier
Klar
Google Analytics
Free
€0 / 100,000 pageviews / 3 sites / 6-month retention
$0 / up to 10,000,000 events per month before sampling
Starter
€3/mo / 500,000 pageviews / 10 sites / 1-year
— (no paid mid-tier; free tier or 360)
Pro / Growth
€7/mo / 2,000,000 pageviews / 50 sites / unlimited retention
— (no paid mid-tier; free tier or 360)
Enterprise

GA4 360: commonly reported to start around $50,000/year for 25M events/mo, negotiated via reseller

Caveat: "free" isn't the full cost story. GA4's price is $0, but running it compliantly in the EU typically means paying for a consent-management platform, and getting raw event-level data past 14 months means exporting to BigQuery, which bills separately. Klar's price already includes unlimited retention on paid tiers and needs no consent tooling.

When Klar wins

  • You want to ship without a cookie banner — Klar sets no cookies and needs no consent management platform; GA4's default cookie-based tracking typically requires one under GDPR.
  • You care about page weight — ~1.9 KB vs ~146 KB gzipped is roughly 77× smaller, a difference that shows up directly in Core Web Vitals.
  • You want your DNT setting respected — Klar honors Do Not Track via data-honor-dnt; GA4 does not.
  • You're wary of EU data-transfer risk — several EU data protection authorities have flagged default Google Analytics configurations over US data transfers; Klar stores no PII and processes data in the EU by design.
  • You want a dashboard you can actually read in five minutes — GA4's feature depth comes with a steep learning curve; Klar's dashboard is deliberately minimal.

When Google Analytics wins

  • You want zero-cost analytics at any scale up to 10M events/month — GA4 standard is free, full stop; Klar charges once you outgrow the free tier.
  • You run Google Ads — native integration between GA4 and Google Ads (conversion tracking, remarketing audiences) has no equivalent in Klar.
  • You need cross-platform tracking — one GA4 property covers web, iOS, and Android; Klar is web-only.
  • You need built-in funnels, path exploration, or predictive metrics — these are first-class GA4 Explore reports; Klar requires building the equivalent from custom event properties.
  • You need raw data at scale — GA4's BigQuery export gives you SQL access to the full event stream (at extra GCP cost); Klar has no equivalent raw-export path today.

How we verified this

  • Klar facts cross-checked against docs/PRODUCT.md and the source code under src/.
  • GA4 free-tier event cap and data-retention limits cross-checked against Google Analytics Help documentation as of 2026-09-03.
  • gtag.js gzipped script weight sourced from Plausible's public Google Analytics script size comparison — a competitor's page, so treat the exact figure as directional rather than vendor-confirmed.
  • GA4 360 pricing is not published by Google; the figure cited is a commonly reported reseller starting price and should be confirmed directly with Google for any purchase decision.
  • Where this page disagrees with the vendor's own marketing, the vendor's site wins — please tell us if you spot a discrepancy.
